Amber Burns is an AmeriCorps VISTA member working with Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in biomedical engineering and mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with University Honor’s. During her time at UAB, she gained experience as a teaching assistant for freshmen chemistry and calculus II. She also worked one summer as an intern performing research at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
Amber began working with the ToGetHerThere Alabama initiative because it addresses problems she often witnessed firsthand. Growing up in rural Alabama, Amber saw many of her female friends and acquaintances tended to underestimate their potential and some refused to pursue interests in engineering and mathematics due to lack of confidence. Amber believes that ToGetHerThere Alabama will help girls in Chilton County and surrounding regions to achieve their greatest aspirations. She is also excited to watch people within the community come together to invest in underserved girls who are often overlooked.
Amber enjoys spending time with her church, West End Baptist Church, and attempting to garden. She also has two small dogs who live like kings in her home in Clanton.
